Ref FOL/HOL/368Le Bas Chenay
This attractive detached Normandy stone cottage is ideally situated amid beautiful countryside, with forest nearby, yet the town of Medieval Domfront and its ruined castle ramparts are visible from the gardens.
Originally part of a ‘Corps de Ferme’ - one of a small group of buildings (only two have been converted) which used to be a small working farm. The buildings are typical of the area – stone and colombage – the cottage originally being the farmers accommodation. Guests particularly like the quietness and space provided with the property.
Recently sympathetically restored to a high standard, this detached property sleeps four people and is situated less than five mins drive from the patisserie, supermarkets, shops and restaurants. The cottage provides an ideal base for a variety of holiday tastes i.e. to relax and unwind, for touring the area or hunting for the “French Dream’.
There are many places to visit -historical and interesting, literally in every direction.
This charming cottage – which is well equipped, has a spacious comfortably furnished sitting room with many old beams, a stone/brick fireplace and a D.V.D player.
The Kitchen/Diner includes a gas cooker, fridge and washing machine.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms each with two single beds and two bathrooms (one en-suite) with cupboards providing hanging and shelving space. There are electric heaters in every room.
Outside there is a private garden with terrace, grassed area, millstone table, chairs and covered parking.
Pets are welcome providing they are kept under control as we often have cows in the surrounding fields!
The English owners have separate accommodation in the other converted building and are happy to assist in day to day needs or house hunting if required!!
The Area
The location is rural but Medieval Domfront itself has an interesting history - William the Conquerer found it worth visiting and we are sure you will agree!!! Along with the ramparts and far reaching views, the town has many old buildings, squares and two extremely beautiful churches – all worth exploring. One of the many facilities close by include the Spa Town of Bagnoles de L’Orne -which has a casino, cinema, tennis courts, swimming pool, a large lake plus many excellent restaurants. The charming Forest des Andaines just to the north of Domfront covers several squares miles and can be crossed in many directions. The area is ideal for walking, cycling and fishing (with several rivers and lakes nearby). If you wish to try cycling with a difference Velo Rail is fun! Golfers can be catered for at Bagnoles de L’Orne – a pretty but testing nine hole course, at Flers some 20 mins away or 18 holes at Laval or Clecy – 50 mins away.
The area, steeped in history has numerous local interesting villages/towns, including Lonlay L’Abbeye, Lassay Les Chateau, St Hilaire and Fougeres and many of these hold weekly markets.
Wonderful beaches are to be found just over an hour away including Le Mont St. Michel, Cancale (which is the oyster capital of France), St. Malo, Dinan & Dinard. There are several ports within fairly easy drive i.e Caen is 1.25 hrs, St.Malo 1.25hrs and Calais 4.5hrs
P.S The local apple/pear poire tasting must not be missed!!!
